How do I get promoted? Some of my clients have a goal of getting promoted when we start our coaching relationship. Sometimes, the path to a promotion can be overwhelming and people can be unsure of how to navigate it. While I want to emphasize that your specific situation may be unique, factoring these 5 strategies into your promotion journey can help empower you to make it happen.
1. Think outside the boss
Too many people think they only need their boss to be their advocate for promotion. While this direct-report relationship can certainly help in your promotion journey, don't underestimate the value of other allies and relationships. Who are the influential leaders across other departments you could build relationships with? Build these relationships with the leaders around you so that when the promotion cycle comes around, you are top of mind among many - not just your boss.
2. Network
Networking is a critical component of any successful career. Focus on building relationships (internally and externally) with people who can offer you insights into your industry or job function, as well as potential job leads or referrals. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and seek out opportunities to connect with others in your field. When you do make a connection, be sure to follow up and maintain that relationship over time.
3. Have a mentor? Great! No? Get one.
Having a mentor can be a game-changer in any career journey. Look for someone who has experience and success in your field, and who you can learn from and relate to. This person should be someone who can offer you advice, guidance, and support, and who is willing to invest in your growth. Remember that mentorship is a two-way street – be sure to take charge of booking the meetings and show up to those meetings prepared! Take the time to put together an agenda and be sure to share your recent wins. They want to celebrate your successes with you!
4. Establish your brand (see previous post!)
It is important to take the time to get clear on your skills, values, and experience that sets you apart from others. What are you currently known for? Is that a valuable reputation at the next level in your career? Define your brand, then actively promote yourself in accordance. Think about the impression you want to leave people with so that they are aware of your accomplishments and skills. Foster opportunities to highlight your accomplishments and skills in a way that is meaningful to you.
5. Advocate for yourself and your promotion
Finally, don't be afraid to lean in and voice what you want and need. A number of my clients say “I want to be ready for a promotion by X date.” I encourage clients to shift their thinking to “I want the organization to be ready for my promotion by X date.” No one else is going to hand you a promotion, just because you are ready for it. Be your biggest advocate so that as you start to explore the idea of a promotion, your boss and allies know it. Schedule meetings to discuss your goals, progress, and growth areas. Start to build a case for why you are ready and don't wait for someone else to recognize your potential – take control of your career and make your intentions known.
The promotion journey can be a fun challenge to explore and by empowering yourself with some of these strategies, you can increase your chances of success. Remember that you are in charge of your own career. And as always - reach out if you would like a coaching partner in your journey!
